Making the Most of the Writing Center

12 Jun

The Writing Center (located in B17-A) is available to meet any and all of your writing needs. Today, we will discuss the many ways that you can use the Writing Center, and how to make the most of your Writing Center tutoring session.

First and foremost:

The Christ College Writing Center assists students and faculty/staff with academic and professional papers and projects (writing assignments, resumes, speech outlines, etc.). Writing Center consultants will work collaboratively with clients to empower them and help them better understand and use the writing process. At the end of a consultation session, clients should have acquired knowledge and skills that can be used on future papers and projects.

What does this mean?

The Writing Center is here to help you with any writing project, big or small! Whether it’s a paper for your English course, a reflection for a Nursing course, or even your final project in Statistics, if it involves writing, we can help! This also means that we can help with other kinds of writing, like resumes or cover letters. If you need to draft a document and you do not know where to start, or you would like a second set of eyes reviewing your paper, come to the Writing Center for help!

What should I bring to a Writing Center appointment?

To make the most of a Face-to-Face appointment, you should bring any materials that you may need or may be using to work on that particular writing project. This could include your assignment description, but also things like any class notes, brainstorming, or pre-writing, and even source material! If you are working on a resume or cover letter, bring any past resumes and any ideas that you have. Laptops are welcome!

When completing an Online appointment, you will receive an email from the Writing Center with instructions on where to submit your document. As explained in the email, you may also want to include a description of the assignment (in your own words) and any concerns that you have about the assignment. This will assist your tutor as they review the document, allowing them to provide the best possible feedback that they can!

What else should I know?

You can visit the Writing Center at any stage of the writing process. This means that you can come in before you have even written anything if you need help brainstorming ideas or constructing an outline. You could also bring in a partially developed document that needs more development, which can be particularly helpful if you feel stuck, or a fully developed document that could use an extra review. We are happy to help with whatever problem, whenever we are needed!
